City Town Village
SZIGETKÖZ
Szigetköz, bounded by the River Mosoni Danube and the Danube, is Hungary's largest archipelago. As the Danube reaches the flatlands the full force of the river dissipates and the waters deposit the silt which forms its islands. This water labyrinth is a real paradise for rowers and anglers. Kayaking and canoeing enthusiasts can also enjoy picturesque water trips. This water paradise offers many opportunities for bathing.
MOSONMAGYARÓVÁR
This town with its population of 30,700 inhabitants is often called the capital city of Szigetköz, although it is not actually located within the borders of the geographical area of Szigetköz. It is situated on the shores of the Mosoni Danube and the River Lajta. Under the name of Ad Flexum the town was already a flourishing settlement even in Roman times. People who like wonderfully restored, old buildings should walk along Magyar (Hungarian) Street and look at the beautifully painted Pieta, the drinking well of St. László, the former estate mill and the beer factory; the oldest industrial factory of Hungary, or Fő (Main) Street with the post office and the Cselley house, the building of the old city-hall and let's not forget the Castle of Óvár and the Castle Estate a few minutes from the mill. The most significant tourist facility in the town is the Thermal Bath.
HALÁSZI
Halászi, often described as the Gate of Szigetköz, is a village 5 kilometres from Mosonmagyaróvár, on the bank of the Moson branch of the river Danube. The past is symbolised in its place-name: one-time residents were suppliers of fish for the estate in Magyaróvár. In the 16th century, the privileged status of market town was obtained, and later the right to use a seal. Local tradition holds that the nearby place names Salamon Lane and Salamon Wood hark back to the memory of King Salamon's fight for his throne in the 11th century, when he was sheltered by the village. He donated these areas to the village, when he regained his throne. Significant buildings include two gabled peasant houses in the village centre and the very grand Baroque church.
LIPÓT
This village of 705 inhabitants between Győr and Mosonmagyaróvár on the Danube, the paradise of cyclers, rowers and bathers is often called the Pearl of Szigetköz. Its romantic landscape, rich fauna and flora and waterworld satisfy both those seeking active tourism and those craving relaxation. Its 65 C thermal waters spouting from a depth of 2200 meters are invaluable in the treatment of locomotor diseases. Its beautiful horse chestnut alley and its breath-taking lake with water-lilies are nature reserves.
DUNAKILITI
The village is situated in the magnificent "River Island" countryside, to the North-western gate of Hungary, 10 kilometres from Mosonmagyaróvár and the Hungarian-Austrian border; 70 kilometres from Vienna, the capital of Austria, and 30 kilometres from Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. Significant buildings include the Batthyány mansion with its attractive park, Németh villa, the Village House, and the Roman Catholic church built in neo-Gothic style.
